안녕하세요, 여러분. 저는 신재난의학아카데미의 CEO / Founder / Director인 신희준입니다. 저희 신재난의학아카데미에 오신 여러분을 진심으로 환영합니다.
신재난의학아카데미는 대한민국의 차세대 재난의학 전문가를 배출하는 것을 우선 목표로 하여 설립되었습니다.
지난 30년간 우리는 1991년 필리핀 피나투보 화산 폭발, 2004년 인도양 쓰나미, 2010년 아이티 대지진, 2020년 COVID-19 팬데믹, 그리고 2023년 터키 대지진 등과 같은 자연 재난과 1986년 체르노빌 원자력 사고, 2001년 9/11 테러 공격, 2010년 딥워터 호라이즌 오일 스필, 그리고 2020년 베이루트 폭발 사건 등 끔찍한 재난들이 세상을 뒤흔들어 온 것을 목도하였습니다. 이들은 자연재난뿐만 아니라 인간의 행동으로 인해 발생한 '인간이 만든 재난'의 파괴력을 우리에게 절실히 깨닫게 해주었습니다.
이를 통해 우리는 새로운 도전에 대응하고, 재난으로부터 발생하는 고통을 최소화하며, 더욱 안전한 세상을 만들어가기 위한 교육의 중요성을 인식하게 되었습니다. 더불어 우리는 한국의 재난의학 전문가들이 세계 어디서든 도전에 맞서 싸울 수 있도록 지원해 나가야 할 토대가 필요함을 알게 되었습니다.
전 세계 재난의학 전문가들의 필독 교과서인 Ciottone's Disaster Medicine Book의 저자이자 저의 스승이신 Dr. Gregory Ciottone은 그의 저서에서 재난의학을 응급관리와 위기 상황에서의 의료 처치의 결혼이라고 정의했습니다. 부부가 사랑으로 서로를 인정하고 협력해야 행복한 가정을 일구듯이, 성공적인 재난 관리를 위해서는 재난관리에 관여하는 다양한 주체들이 서로를 인정하고 함께 교육받고 소통하며 임무를 수행해야 합니다.
이곳은 이 시대의 새로운 도전에 맞서고자 끊임없이 노력하는 차세대 재난의학 전문가들이 성장하는 터전입니다. 신재난의학아카데미는 Global Excellence를 목표로 하여 국내외 최정상의 재난의학 전문가 패컬티들을 분야별 교육 강사로 초빙하였습니다.
존 F. 케네디는 1962년 라이스 스타디움에서 "우리는 이 일이 쉬워서가 아니라, 어렵기 때문에 하기로 선택했다"고 말했고, 아브라함 링컨은 1861년 뉴저지주 상원 연설에서 "나의 임기가 끝나면, 난 가장 훌륭한 노력을 기울였다는 것을 알 수 있을 것이다"라고 말했습니다. 우리는 쉬운 일을 위해 여기에 있는 것이 아니라, 힘든 일을 위해 여기에 있습니다.
우리의 목표는 차세대 재난의학 전문가를 양성하는 것입니다. 교육생의 범위에는 의사, 간호사, 구조사뿐만 아니라 재난 연구자, 재난 관리자, 재난 일차 대응자, 구급대, 보건 의료인, 군인, 경찰, 정책입안 공무원, 정치가, 및 관심 있는 시민 등 재난관리에 관심이 있는 모든 직역이 포함됩니다.
재난이라는 어려움에 직면했을 때 우리 모두가 굳건히 서서 그에 맞서 싸울 수 있도록 돕는 것이 우리의 임무입니다. 이 특별한 기회에 용기 있는 여러분의 적극적인 지원을 바랍니다. 감사합니다.
Greetings esteemed colleagues, I am Heejun Shin, the CEO, Founder, and Director of the Shin's Disaster Medicine Academy (SDMA). It is with profound honor that I welcome each one of you to our esteemed institution.
The Shin's Disaster Medicine Academy was established with the primary aim of fostering the next generation of disaster medicine experts in South Korea.
Over the past 30 years, we have borne witness to natural disasters like the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo, the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, and the 2023 earthquake in Turkey. Additionally, we've observed man-made tragedies such as the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, the 2001 9/11 terrorist attacks, the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and the 2020 Beirut explosion. These incidents have underscored not just the devastation of natural occurrences but the harrowing impact of human-induced catastrophes.
Such events have illuminated the paramount importance of education in addressing novel challenges, minimizing suffering from disasters, and crafting a safer world. We've recognized the need to provide a foundation for South Korean disaster medicine experts to confront challenges anywhere in the world.
Dr. Gregory Ciottone, the author of the essential textbook for global disaster medicine experts, Ciottone's Disaster Medicine Book, and my mentor, defined disaster medicine as the marriage of emergency management and medical intervention in crisis situations. Just as a harmonious marriage is built on mutual respect, cooperation, and understanding, successful disaster management mandates collaboration, education, and communication among various stakeholders.
This institution serves as a nurturing ground for the next generation of disaster medicine experts. Our academy, with global excellence as its motto, has invited top-tier disaster medicine professionals both domestically and internationally to serve as educators.
President John F. Kennedy once proclaimed in his 1962 Rice Stadium speech, "We choose to do these things not because they are easy, but because they are hard." Similarly, Abraham Lincoln, in a 1861 speech to the New Jersey Senate, declared, "When my term ends, I shall know I gave my best." We are not here for the easy tasks but for the difficult ones.
Our goal is comprehensive, targeting not just doctors and nurses but also disaster researchers, administrators, first responders, medical personnel across various sectors, soldiers, police officers, policy-making officials, politicians, and even concerned citizens.
Facing the adversity of disasters, our mission is to ensure that everyone stands firm, ready to confront and overcome. I earnestly implore your brave support in this noble endeavor. Thank you.
